Symposium for Multicultural Scholars Showcase
Toni “Mama” Thorpe, Program Coordinator of the African American Cultural Center, claps while leading the crowd in a chant during the 2016 Multicultural Symposium at the Witherspoon Cinema Friday, Aug. 12. The chant was a proverb from Ghana in West Africa, “It is not taboo to go back and fetch that which you have forgotten.” The symposium is a summer educational and transitional experience sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs as well as the Offices of Native American, African American and Latino Student Affairs. The purpose of the Symposium was to foster a sense of community for incoming first-year students and provide them with information on campus resources. “The showcase was very inspiring, powerful and moving” said Chyra Savage, a freshman studying engineering.
