A political activist who, along with Bobby Seale, founded the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. With the Panthers, Newton initiated several programs aimed at strengthening the Black community, including the Oakland Community School, which provided high-level education to children from impoverished urban neighborhoods, and the Free Breakfast for Children Program.
