Fact vs. Fiction: How gender roles affect sex and relationship baggage: A closer look at the collegiate perspective

We all have had that burning thought about what the opposite gender really thinks about from day-to-day at some point or another. The Battle of the Sexes program hosted by the Kappa Lambda chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and the Mu Omicron chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. helped put some old wives tales to rest and quenched the true desire to delve into the thought process of men and women in regards to sex, stereotypes, and share perspectives on relationships and hygiene practices that may or may not increase a person’s libido. The organizations sought to explicitly bring what is talked and laughed about behind closed doors in the forefront of the community. These very issues are most affecting our population in the realm of sexually transmitted diseases and dying at an alarming rate, African American students between the age of 18 and 24.

The Secret Life of Bees


“The Secret Life of Bees”, is a beautiful novel by Sue Monk Kidd, that was brought to life on the big screen Friday October 17, 2008. This highly anticipated film is a wonderful family drama with an all-star cast. With the likes of Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo and Paul Bettany, and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Prince- Bythewood directed one of the greatest love stories known to date, “Love and Basketball” and has continued to give great prestige to her name with this movie. Jada Pinkett-Smith was the executive producer for this film.

New student group works to end interpersonal violence

National statistics suggest that 490 NC State women could be a victim of rape or attempted rape each academic school year. Alarming statistics like this one are the momentum behind organizations like The Movement. Many students haven’t been formally introduced to this new organization run in conjunction with the Women’s Center. During the spring of 2008, program advisor, Juliette Grimmett, began the course that serves as a pre-requisite for The Movement and is the foundation for training the members of this influential organization. Juliette Grimmett has been with the Women’s Center since the spring of 2007 and is the visionary behind organization. It consists of students from a variety of backgrounds, and ages and is both male and female. Since her arrival, the Women’s Center has seen a tremendous increase in the number of reported rape and assault cases from nine in a school year on average to about 70 reports.
