Heritage Day prompts students to give back

On Saturday, October 25th the African American Cultural Center (AACC) will welcome scores of area kids for this year’s Heritage Day. Heritage Day is an annual event that involves students from multiple student organizations working with area students, most of them ranging from six to fourteen years old.

Fact vs. Fiction: How gender roles affect sex and relationship baggage: A closer look at the collegiate perspective

We all have had that burning thought about what the opposite gender really thinks about from day-to-day at some point or another. The Battle of the Sexes program hosted by the Kappa Lambda chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and the Mu Omicron chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. helped put some old wives tales to rest and quenched the true desire to delve into the thought process of men and women in regards to sex, stereotypes, and share perspectives on relationships and hygiene practices that may or may not increase a person’s libido. The organizations sought to explicitly bring what is talked and laughed about behind closed doors in the forefront of the community. These very issues are most affecting our population in the realm of sexually transmitted diseases and dying at an alarming rate, African American students between the age of 18 and 24.

“The Secret Life of Bees”, is a beautiful novel by Sue Monk Kidd, that was brought to life on the big screen Friday October 17, 2008. This highly anticipated film is a wonderful family drama with an all-star cast. With the likes of Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo and Paul Bettany, and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Prince- Bythewood directed one of the greatest love stories known to date, “Love and Basketball” and has continued to give great prestige to her name with this movie. Jada Pinkett-Smith was the executive producer for this film.

The Association of African American Student Educators (AAASE) held its second annual AAASE College Day on Saturday, in conjunction with Open House. As students and their parents packed outside the Student Senate Chambers of Witherspoon Student Center, the air was filled with excitement and shuffling of NCSU goody bags bearing the Wolfpack emblem.
