Augustus Witherspoon was the second African American to earn a doctoral degree from the University. Later, he became the University’s first African American professor and is currently the only African American with a campus building bearing his name. He and Dr. Clark are credited as the founding fathers of the Cultural Center, Peer Mentor Program, the African American Symposium, among other initiatives.
